North Macedonia launches soil sensor installation project to help modernize agriculture

The Republic of North Macedonia has launched a major agricultural modernization project, with plans to install advanced soil sensors throughout the country to improve agricultural production efficiency and sustainability. This project, supported by the government, the agricultural sector and international partners, marks an important step in the innovation of agricultural science and technology in North Macedonia.

North Macedonia is a predominantly agricultural country, and agriculture plays an important role in its economy. However, agricultural production has long faced challenges from poor water management, uneven soil fertility and climate change. To address these challenges, the government of North Macedonia decided to introduce advanced soil sensor technology to enable precision agriculture.

The main goal of the project is to help farmers make more scientific decisions by monitoring key indicators such as soil moisture, temperature, and nutrient content in real time, thereby improving crop yield and quality, reducing water and fertilizer use, and ultimately achieving sustainable agricultural development.

The project will install 500 advanced soil sensors in the main agricultural areas of North Macedonia. These sensors will be distributed across different types of soil and crop growing areas to ensure comprehensiveness and representation of the data.

The sensors will collect data every 15 minutes and transmit it wirelessly to a central database. Farmers can view this data in real time via a mobile app or web platform and adjust irrigation and fertilization strategies as needed. In addition, the data will be used for agricultural research and policy development to further optimize agricultural production.

Speaking at the launch ceremony of the project, the Minister of Agriculture of North Macedonia said: “The implementation of the soil sensor project will provide our farmers with unprecedented precision agriculture tools. This will not only help improve the efficiency of agricultural production, but also reduce the impact on the environment and achieve sustainable development.”

According to the project plan, in the next few years, North Macedonia will promote soil sensor technology across the country, covering more agricultural areas. At the same time, the government also plans to introduce more agricultural science and technology innovation projects, such as drone monitoring, satellite remote sensing, etc., to comprehensively improve the intelligent level of agricultural production.

In addition, North Macedonia also hopes to attract more international investment and technical cooperation through this project, and promote the upgrading and development of the agricultural industry chain.

The launch of the soil Sensor project is an important milestone in the process of agricultural modernization in North Macedonia. Through the introduction of advanced technologies and concepts, agriculture in North Macedonia will embrace new development opportunities and lay a solid foundation for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
